Let me teach you, please

Teaching is in my blood, from both Mom and Dad, and I inherited their passion. I believe that my role is to teach students how to learn, so they can continue to expand their knowledge and understanding long after the particular course had concluded. I want my students to share in my passion for photography and my love of learning.

When I set out to plan a course and think about how best to teach it, I give myself a “temporary lobotomy”, erasing all the knowledge I have about the subject. By mentally placing myself in the position of not knowing, I seek to teach from the perspective of the student, rather than from that of the professor who already knows the information. Then I can discern the best teaching method and organizational structure to engage the students in the learning process and encourage their exploration of the subject.

The Photo Workshop

I’ve been hosting this virtual workshop since the pandemic shut us all down. It’s a unique opportunity to expand your photographic horizons, explore different shooting styles and learn new techniques. We meet every other week via Zoom, and take on unique photo challenges, then share the results in the next session. If you’re interested, hit the button for more info.

Ryerson Chang School

Teaching at Ryerson has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve done. I get to allow students to see their own world in a new and uniquely personal way, and discover a new way to share that world. My favorite response from any student is “I never saw that before!”. This signals the moment when a new world opens up and the student starts to truly “see as a photographer”. It’s that moment that has kept me engaged and excited about teaching for over 20 years!
